How Long Does a Hearing Test Take?

Ever wondered how long to set aside for a hearing appointment? For most people, a full hearing assessment takes between 30 and 60 minutes from start to finish.

That includes a review of your hearing history, the assessment itself, and a conversation about what the results mean for you. Not a long time, but long enough to do the job properly.

What Happens During a Typical Hearing Test

Most assessments follow a similar structure, though the exact tests will depend on your situation.

It all starts with a conversation: your audiologist will ask about your concerns, medical background, and any symptoms you've noticed. Then, a quick physical check of your ears for wax, infection, or anything structural. Both done within the first 10 minutes.

The test itself involves listening to different pitches and volumes through headphones in a quiet booth. You indicate when you hear each sound, building a detailed picture of your hearing across frequencies. This takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Speech recognition or middle ear assessments may follow, adding 5 to 10 minutes each.

Does Appointment Length Vary?

Your first hearing test usually takes longer than follow-up appointments because there's more background information to gather and more thorough baseline testing to complete.

If you have complex hearing needs or symptoms that require investigation, your audiologist may perform additional specialised tests. These might include tests for tinnitus assessment, or more detailed middle ear function checks.

Also, if hearing aids are being discussed or fitted during the same appointment, you should allow considerably more time - potentially 90 minutes to two hours.

Preparing for Your Appointment

You don't need special preparation for a hearing test, but arriving a few minutes early helps ensure you have time to complete any paperwork without rushing.

Avoid exposure to loud noise for at least 12-14 hours before your test if possible, as temporary threshold shifts from noise exposure can affect results.

Also, bring a list of any medications you take and details of relevant medical history, particularly ear infections, noise exposure, or family history of hearing loss.

What to Expect After the Test

Most professionals will discuss your results immediately after testing, spending 10-15 minutes explaining what the audiogram shows and what it means for your hearing health.

If treatment or hearing aids are recommended, this discussion may extend your appointment.

Either way, you’ll leave with clear next steps, whether that's monitoring your hearing over time, considering hearing aids, or seeking further medical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book time off work for a hearing test?

Most tests fit within an hour - a long lunch break usually covers it. Allow a bit more if hearing aids are being discussed at the same visit.

How often should hearing tests be repeated?

Every 3 to 5 years with normal hearing. Annually if you're over 60, have known hearing loss, or work in a noisy environment.

Are online hearing tests as accurate as in-person tests?

Online hearing tests can provide a general indication of hearing ability but aren't substitutes for professional assessments and can’t provide accurate diagnosis. If an online test raises a concern - book an audiology appointment.

What's the difference between a hearing test and a hearing aid fitting?

A hearing test takes 30 to 60 minutes. A fitting - device selection, programming, instruction - is a separate appointment, typically 60 to 90 minutes. Some clinics do both.

Can hearing tests detect all types of hearing problems?

The most common types, yes. However some conditions like auditory processing disorder require specialist testing beyond routine audiometry. Your audiologist will flag if that's needed.
